History of the Vaal Dam

Established in the late 1930's, when the Vaal Dam was built to serve the water needs of Johannesburg, it was once a stopover point for the Imperial Airways (forerunner of British Airways) Flying Boat service, between Britain and South Africa, when passengers were able to make use of an hotel on the shores of the dam.

The village is a mecca for the serious yachtsman, for water-skiers, jet skiers, canoeists, fishermen, bird watchers and astronomers.

The Vaal Lookout is designed to serve the needs of tourists, the corporate sector, water sports enthusiasts and those seeking a peaceful weekend retreat. It also makes a delightful base for visiting members of the horse racing fraternity, with the Vaal Racecourse being only 15 minutes away.
